Empoli promoted to Serie A

Empoli have been promoted to Serie A after seeing off Pescara to win 2-0 at the Stadio Carlo Castellani.

A second half own goal from Federico Di Francesco put them in front after 70 minutes before Francesco Tavano doubled their lead just four minutes later.

The Tuscan club have competed in the second tier since suffering relegation in 2008, but victory over Pescara on Friday night saw them finish the Serie B season behind only champions Palermo.

Latina, Cesena, Modena, Crotone, Bari and Spezia will now battle it out for the third and final promotion place through a new six-club play-off system.
