England make winning start
England's women got their EuroHockey Championships off to a winning start with a 3-0 victory over Spain in Belgium.
Olympic bronze medallist Hannah Macleod gave her side the ideal start after just four minutes when she fired home a penalty corner rebound from a narrow angle.
Captain Kate Walsh doubled the lead with a drag-flick from another set-piece midway through the half and just after the break 18-year-old Lily Owsley made it 3-0 with only her second senior international goal.
With Germany beating Scotland 1-0, England top the group early on ahead of their meeting with the Germans on Sunday.
"We drew with Spain 1-1 at the Investec World League (in June) and we knew it would be a tight and difficult game for us today," said coach Jason Lee.
"They are a good defensive side so it was very pleasing to get a 3-0 win.
"It was good to score from a couple of early corners and I think on another day we might have scored a few more, but we showed some first-game nerves towards the end which probably stopped us playing the style we wanted.
"But with a 3-0 lead the job had already been done, so I'm very happy."
