Errani heads into round two

Sara Errani booked her place in the second round of the Madrid Open with a straight-sets win over Andrea Petkovic.

The 10th seed, a former French Open finalist, had to battle to win the first set before racing through the second to seal a 7-5 6-1 win.

Errani saved five out of six break points in the first set, taking both of hers to make Germany's Petkovic pay for her missed chances.

And the Italian was equally ruthless in the second, converting all three of her break chances to clinch victory.

Other first-round winners were American duo Alison Riske and Christina McHale, Serbia's Bojana Jovanovski, Slovakia's Magdalena Rybarikova and Spainish pair Garbine Muguruza and Lara Arruabarrena.
