Evans keen to keep Arnason

Rotherham manager Steve Evans will be surprised if defender Kari Arnason is not with the club next season.

Arnason is out of contract at the New York Stadium, but he has been an integral part of the Millers' success which has seen them win back-to-back promotions, with the crowing moment coming in victory at Wembley in the League One play-off final on Sunday.

Negotiations have begun between Arnason's representatives and Evans expects the Iceland international to be in South Yorkshire as the club tackle life in the Championship next year.

"I think they are pretty close from what I gather," the boss said. "Chief executive Paul (Douglas) has been speaking to Arnie's people and he told me it went really well and Arnie has said the same to me so we are nearly there.

"He is away on international duty now but I'd be surprised if he's not here next season."

Arnason himself is keen on a stay, but admits his future is up in the air.

"I am out of contract, so I don't even know if I will be here," he said.

"Who knows? Of course, having helped get this team this far, I would love to stay. We'll see what happens. It's up to them. I have said I want to stay.

"If they don't want me here, that's fine too."
