Evans secures qualifying win
Dan Evans put in a fine display to beat Tim Smyczek in Miami on Monday to move through to the final qualifying round for the Sony Open.
The British No 2 upset the rankings to get the better of the world No 98 6-4 6-2 with a performance that belied the 39 places between them in the pecking order.
Evans now faces a clash with Jimmy Wang on Tuesday, with a place in the main draw up for grabs. Wang's opponent, Aleksandr Nedovyesov, retired from their clash.
A place in the top 100 of the rankings beckons for Evans if he can progress, with his form in 2014 a high point for the British game.
With Andy Murray still getting used to the Tour again after back surgery, Evans made the semi-finals in Croatia last month and also played in the main draw at Indian Wells.
He sent down seven aces against Smyczek and despite struggling on his first serve, backed-up sufficiently with 83 per cent of the points on his second delivery to get the job done.
