Ex champ Dokes dies, aged 54
Former heavyweight champion Michael Dokes has died, aged 54.
Dokes won the WBA title in 1982 when defending champion Mike Weaver was stopped in a controversial decision by referee Joey Curtis.
He relinquished the crown less than a year later to Gerrie Coetzee and also failed in a 1993 title tilt against Riddick Bowe when he was knocked out in the first round at Madison Square Garden.
Dokes was arrested in Las Vegas for cocaine trafficking and served two years' probation in 1986 - and 14 years later he was sentenced to 10 years in jail after pleading guilty to attempted murder, second-degree kidnapping and intent to commit sexual assault against his girlfriend.
A spokeswoman at The Rhoden Memorial Home in Akron, Ohio, confirmed that Dokes' funeral will take place on Saturday.
