Federer enjoys Basel breeze
Roger Federer began his quest for a sixth ATP Swiss Indoors title with a comfortable 6-4 6-2 first-round victory over Frenchman Adrian Mannarino in Basel.
The home favourite, who is desperately seeking much-needed ranking points in an attempt to reach the season-ending World Tour Finals in London, negotiated a tricky opening hurdle in quickfire time.
Five-time champion Federer lost his serve once in the opening set but broke twice himself and wasted little time powering through the second.
Seeded third at his hometown event, Federer recorded a first serve percentage of just 51 against left-handed Mannarino but opened up 13 break points during the match, taking four.
Also on Monday, big-serving Pole Lukasz Kubot beat Spain's Daniel Gimeno-Traver of Spain 7-5 (8/6) 6-2 and Germany's Tobias Kamke overcame Romania's Victor Hanescu 6-4 6-4.
Ukraine's Alexandr Dolgopolov later defeated Kenny de Schepper of France 6-4 6-4 in the final match.
