David Ferrer advanced to the fourth round of the US Open for just the second time in his career with an easy win over Daniel Gimeno-Traver.
Ferrer, the 10th seed at Flushing Meadows, won 7-6 (7/2) 6-2 6-2 in just under two hours to set up a last-16 clash with either David Nalbandian or Fernando Verdasco.
A dominant performance on serve was the key to Ferrer's victory, the 28-year-old holding serve throughout the contest and facing just one break point on Court 11.
The last time Ferrer reached the fourth round in New York was in 2007, when he beat Rafael Nadal on his way to the semi-finals, which remains his best result in a grand slam.
Ferrer will face Verdasco in an all-Spanish fourth round tie after the eighth seed beat Argentina's David Nalbandian in four sets.
A tight contest looked on the cards when Nalbandian took the second set to level the match, but Verdasco stepped up a level when it mattered to complete a 6-3 3-6 6-3 6-2 victory on the Grandstand Court.
A record nine Spanish players had reached the third round, but 14th seed Nicolas Almagro was unable to join Ferrer and Verdasco in the last 16 as he lost in straight sets to American Sam Querrey.
Querrey, the 20th seed, won 6-3 6-4 6-4 to set up a fourth-round clash with either fourth seed Andy Murray or Switzerland's Stanislas Wawrinka.
