Ferrer sails into last eight

Top seed David Ferrer made short work of Romanian Victor Hanescu as he sailed into the quarter-finals of the Swedish Open in Bastad on Thursday.

The 32-year-old Ferrer seized his solitary break point chance on the Hanescu serve in the first set to edge a hard-earned advantage.

But the second set was a different story as Ferrer stepped up to complete a 6-4 6-0 win and seal a last-eight match against defending champion Carlos Berlocq.

The Argentinian seventh seed fought back from a set down to defeat Romanian qualifier Radu Albot 5-7 6-4 6-2.

Third seed Fernando Verdasco safely advanced with a 6-1 7-5 win over fellow Spaniard and qualifier Albert Ramos-Vinolas, while another Spaniard, eighth seed Pablo Carreno-Busta beat Paolo Lorenzi of Italy 6-2 6-2.
