Ferrer seals last-eight spot

Top seed David Ferrer marched into the quarter-finals of the Valencia Open with a 6-4 6-2 84-minute win over Spanish compatriot Albert Ramos.

The world number five, who has already booked his place in the season-ending ATP Championships in London next month, broke Ramos four times on his way to the last eight.

Ferrer will play another Spaniard, Nicolas Almagro, next after the sixth seed, also still holding out hope of reaching London, defeated American Sam Querrey 6-4 6-7 (4/7) 6-0 in a match lasting nine minutes short of two hours.

Marcel Granollers, also from Spain, defeated Frenchman Gilles Simon 6-7 (4/7) 6-3 6-2, Ukraine's Alexandr Dolgopolov brushed aside Luxembourg's Gilles Muller 6-4 6-4, and Austria's Jurgen Melzer beat Xavier Malisse of Belgium 7-5 6-2.
