Fleetwood sets Madeira target
England's Tommy Fleetwood set the early target with a six-under-par 66 in the opening round of the Madeira Island Open on Thursday.
The 21-year-old won last season's Challenge Tour and with Europe's big names away at the Players Championship in Florida he is the highest-ranked player in the field.
Fleetwood, 192nd in the world, went clear with six birdies in his first 12 holes, then bogeyed the short fourth before picking up a further shot right at the end.
That took the Southport golfer, who just missed out on a trip to The Masters by losing the final of the 2008 British Amateur, one ahead of playing partner and compatriot Matthew Baldwin and Austrian HP Bacher.
Baldwin has already had four top-25 finishes on the main circuit after also graduating from the Challenge Tour.
Scot Lloyd Saltman, a team-mate of Rory McIlroy in the 2007 Walker Cup, was among those two behind.
