Flipkens to face Sharapova
Kirsten Flipkens crushed Yvonne Meusberger 6-1 6-3 to set up a quarter-final clash with Maria Sharapova at the Open GDF Suez in Paris.
The Belgian, seeded eighth, needed only an hour to wrap up the victory against the Austrian player, converting all four of her break points.
The Wimbledon semi-finalist will face a different proposition in Friday's last-eight match against Sharapova, who dismissed Daniela Hantuchova on Wednesday with the loss of a single game.
Elina Svitolina of Ukraine beat Galina Voskoboeva of Kazakhstan 6-1 6-2 and next plays third-seeded Sara Errani.
Errani progressed to the last eight after completing a routine 6-4 6-3 victory over fellow Italian Karin Knapp.
German Andrea Petkovic beat Frenchwoman Kristina Mladenovic 6-4 6-2 and will face Alize Cornet or lucky loser Barbora Zahlavova Strycova.
Strycova takes the place of second seed Petra Kvitova, who was forced to withdraw with a respiratory problem.
"I was absolutely intent on playing today but I had to see my doctor as I wasn't feeling well," said the 23-year-old.
"I've got a sore throat and after practising this morning I realised that after 10 minutes I wasn't able to breathe so unfortunately I was forced to withdraw."
