Flotilla sails to glory

French-trained Flotilla galloped into history as the first European winner of the Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf on Friday night.

Christophe Lemaire was coolness personified as he waited before pouncing on the Mikel Delzangles-trained youngster in the middle of the track.

She quickly settled the issue in the final furlong to win from Watsdachances while the strongly-fancied Sky Lantern could never strike a blow after being unable to get a run at a crucial time.

Delzangles said: "I was surprised how well she settled here. I was not confident she would win but thought she would run a good race.

"Hopefully she will be a Classic filly in Europe next year."

Lemaire said: "In the mornings she can be a little bit keen. She can be quite forceful and the pace was not very strong but she had plenty in hand. When I put her out she accelerated very well and I think she won easily.

"She was on the bit today because of the slow pace, so that's why I was a bit worried, but she was much better than the others."
