Fog claims Lingfield card

The remainder of Wednesday afternoon's meeting at Lingfield has been abandoned due to fog.

Two races of a scheduled seven were run in thick fog but visibility worsened as the afternoon wore on and officials were forced to call an early end to the afternoon.

The third race was initially delayed by 15 minutes, but that stretched to half an hour before a further inspection was held and the meeting was abandoned.

A tweet from Lingfield said: "Racing Abandoned. Fog lifted in places to allow two races to go ahead, conditions have worsened and won't allow racing to continue."

Clerk of the course Neil Mackenzie Ross told At The Races: "It comes down to horse and rider safety.

"It's obviously getting worse and there's not many hours left in the day.

"Concerns were raised by the jockeys so it's the sensible decision."

The track was due to stage the 45,000 Compare Bookmakers At Handicap as the fifth race on the card and the Lingfield team will assess the viability of restaging the contest.

Mackenzie Ross added: "We will look into it, but I can't give a yes or no at this stage."
