Fognini falls at first hurdle
Fabio Fognini crashed out in the first round at the Internazionali BNL d'Italia in Rome after suffering a straight-sets defeat to Lukas Rosol.
Rosol is ranked 43 places lower than world number 15 Fognini but eased past the 13th-seeded Italian 6-3 6-2 to set up a second-round tie with Ivan Dodig who beat Federico Delbonis.
Twelfth-seed Grigor Dimitrov battled back from a set down to beat Edouard Roger-Vasselin 4-6 6-3 6-4.
The Bulgarian is due to meet Tomas Berdych in the last 16 but will have to come through big-hitting Ivo Karlovic first, who also had to fight to progress, beating Pablo Carreno Busta 3-6 6-3 7-6 (4).
Jo-Wilfried Tsonga and Mikhail Youzhny are both safely through after seeing off Alexandr Dolgopolov and Nicolas Mahut respectively.
Also through to the second round are Stephane Robert, Gilles Simon, Pere Riba, Paolo Lorenzi, Marcel Granollers and Simone Bolelli.
