Piggy French has emerged as the leading British contender after day one of the Boekelo three-star event in Holland.
Leicestershire-based French, who was selected for Britain's London 2012 eventing team but then withdrew after her two top horses were sidelined through injury, lies fourth overnight with West Side.
Their score of 42.2 penalties means they are well-placed, with 56 of a 113-strong field having completed dressage tests.
Germany's Olympic champion Michael Jung leads the way following a brilliant performance on Halunke FBW that gained them a score of just 32.0.
Jung's London 2012 colleague Dirk Schrade is second with Edino, just in front of New Zealander Tim Price and Wesko.
Tomorrow's starters include the British trio of Pippa Funnell, Oliver Townend and Polly Stockton, German Ingrid Klimke and Olympic medal-winning New Zealanders Andrew Nicholson and Mark Todd.
