FT: Hamburg 0 Celtic 0

Celtic's hopes of reaching the next stage of the Europa League are hanging by a thread after they were held to a goalless draw by Hamburg.

The Hoops spurned a number of decent chances in the first-period, but faded after the break and the draw means they remain bottom of Group C.

Both sides could have taken the lead in the early stages as Marcus Berg tested Lukasz Zaluska before Barry Robson blazed wastefully over the bar.

Scott McDonald then went close twice within a matter of minutes as he sent two shots straight at Frank Rose when put clean through on goal.

Hamburg came within a few inches of taking the lead after the interval as Joris Mathijsen diverted the ball onto the bar.

Celtic's back line was being given a stern examination and the lively Eljero Elia was denied by Zaluska, who also had to tip over a goalbound header from David Rozehnal.
