Galway Plate the goal for Pele

The Romford Pele remains on target for the Galway Plate later this summer following his bloodless victory at Worcester last weekend.

The seven-year-old ran a fine race in defeat at the Punchestown Festival, when third in a lucrative novice handicap chase, and got off the mark over fences with a 19-length triumph on Saturday when fitted with first-time blinkers.

Trainer Rebecca Curtis said: "He's gone up 11lb for winning, which I thought was a bit harsh, but he did win very well.

"The blinkers obviously helped him and, all being well, we'll aim towards Galway. He won't run again between now and then."

Stablemate Bob Keown could also come under consideration for Ireland's big summer fixture after his victory Worcester victory on Tuesday.

Like The Romford Pele, he also performed well at Punchestown, going down by a fast-diminishing neck in a handicap hurdle.

"It was nice to see him win again," said the Newport handler. "He could go to Galway, I'll see what options there are for him. He is probably going to go novice chasing before too long."
