Gasquet beaten in Marseille

Richard Gasquet suffered another early tournament exit after being bundled out of the first round of the Open 13 in Marseille by Gilles Muller.

Frenchman Gasquet, the world number 10, lost in the second round in Rotterdam last week and was sent crashing again today by a player placed 60 places below him in the ATP rankings.

Muller fought back from a set down and then 5-2 down in the decider to claim a 2-6 6-4 7-6 (7/5) victory, the Luxembourg player firing down 19 aces as he earned his first tour-level win of the year.

Two other Frenchmen also bowed out of the tournament today, with wildcard Gael Monfils going out 6-4 6-4 to Spaniard Marcel Granollers, while Benoit Paire lost a hard-fought match 7-6 (8/6) 6-7 (7/9) 6-4 to India's Somdev Devvarman, the world number 354.

It was not all disappointment for home hopes, though, with last year's runner-up Michael Llodra defeating Belgian David Goffin 6-2 6-4.

Other first-round winners today were Nikolay Davydenko, Ernests Gulbis and Roberto Bautista-Agut.
