Gatewood atoned for a luckless run on his Australian debut when landing the Geelong Cup for trainer John Gosden.
The four-year-old finished seventh in a Group Two event at Caulfield earlier this month after a troubled passage but suffered no such problems in running this time.
Ridden by Corey Brown at Caulfield, Glen Boss stepped in for the mount at Geelong and Gatewood produced a nice turn of foot for him in the straight, prevailing by just under a length from Chateau Margaux.
Andre Fabre's French raider Brigantin was back in third in the 12-furlong event.
Last year's Melbourne Cup winner Dunaden won this Group Three contest before going on to Flemington, as did 2010 hero Americain and Dermot Weld's Media Puzzle back in 2002.
Racing Victoria handicapper Greg Carpenter will announce on Thursday whether Gatewood will be handed a penalty for the Melbourne Cup, a race he is not certain to make the field for at present.
