GB women win in Colombia

Jess Varnish and Rebecca James got Great Britain off to a golden start at the Track World Cup in Cali by winning the women's team sprint.

The duo clocked a time of 33.734 seconds in the final which proved over a second and a half faster than Japan's Kayono Maeda and Hiroko Ishii.

The result proved the perfect comeback for Varnish, whose last appearance came at the Olympics when she suffered an agonising disqualification alongside the recently-retired Victoria Pendleton.

And Britain were also celebrating in the men's 1km time trial after Kian Emadi took silver on his international debut.

The Staffordshire-based 20 year old - who only started racing competitively as a teenager - stopped the clock at 1min 1.368sec which was just 0.386sec shy of Colombian Fabian Puerta.

Elinor Barker, Clara Horne and Amy Roberts then rounded off a good opening night for the British riders by sealing silver for a Welsh select outfit in the women's team pursuit final after suffering a narrow defeat by Italy.
