Giants hold off Panthers

The Belfast Giants claimed a 5-4 win over the Nottingham Panthers on Saturday to close the gap at the top of the Elite League to two points.

The table-topping Panthers took the lead after just 24 seconds but the defending league champions responded with four unanswered goals to lead 4-1 at the end of the first period.

The Panthers reduced the gap to a single goal in the second but Adam Keefe got what proved to be the winner early in the third.

Nottingham travel to arch rivals Sheffield on Sunday and the Steelers claimed a 4-2 win over the Coventry Blaze on Saturday night to close to within five points of the leaders thanks to two goals and an assist from Simon Ferguson.

Rene Jarolin scored two, including the overtime winner, as the Edinburgh Capitals beat the Cardiff Devils 5-4.

The Fife Flyers claimed bragging rights in Scotland with a 5-0 win over the Dundee Stars, while the Braehead Clan claimed a 2-1 win over the Hull Stingrays after a shootout.
