Gills boss salutes team effort

Manager Martin Allen pointed to the depth of his Gillingham squad as the main ingredient after a seventh win from eight unbeaten games.

Allen made four changes from the team which beat Southend on Tuesday and his side proved too strong for second-placed Port Vale, whose four-match winning run came to a disappointing end in a 2-0 home reverse in League Two.

Gillingham newcomer Robbie Findley, on loan from Nottingham Forest, was highly impressive at Vale Park on Saturday as the visitors moved into a two-goal lead which they never looked like relinquishing.

But Allen said: "I'm not going to single anyone out. He's just another player who has joined us and he's not made us any better.

"We've got 20 good players who are all working together and they will all play games. I've got every faith in all of them and we can make changes without weakening the team.

"We worked hard in pre-season and we are a close-knit club with everyone pulling together on and off-the-field. It's too early in the season to make predictions and now we move on to the next game. Some of the older players have worked tirelessly and they will now need resting before we play Rochdale next Saturday."
