Giraldo through in Auckland

Santiago Giraldo progressed through to the second round of the Heineken Open in Auckland with a straight-sets victory over Albert Montanes.

Colombian Giraldo, who reached the semi-finals of the tournament in 2011, cruised through the first set but was made to work harder in the second by Spaniard Montanes before the world number 68 recorded a 6-1 7-6 (7/3) triumph.

American wild card Jack Sock will face second seed Tommy Haas in the next round after the 21-year-old eased through his first-round clash against Frenchman Adrian Mannarino 6-3 6-4.

Also going through on Monday was Argentinian Horacio Zeballos who, like Giraldo, had to overcome a second-set fightback by his opponent before recording a 6-0 7-6 (7/1) win over Italian Filippo Volandri.
