Robbie Grabarz set a new personal best of 2.36 metres in the high jump at Saturday night's Diamond League meeting in New York.
However, the British Olympic hopeful had to settle for second place.
The 24-year-old continued his impressive form ahead of London 2012 as he eclipsed his previous best mark of 2.33m, which he set to win in Rome last month.
However, Grabarz was pipped to victory by American Jesse Williams, who also cleared 2.36m, on countback.
Marilyn Okoro clocked a time of one minute 59.37 seconds to finish third in the women's 800m, behind Ethiopia's Fantu Magiso and Molly Beckwith of the United States.
Andrew Osagie put in an impressive performance to cross the line third in the men's 800m, with a personal best of 1:44.61.
Goldie Sayers was just outside the medals in the javelin with her throw of 59.23m, while Lawrence Okoye came fifth in the discus with a distance of 63.87m.
Away from the British contenders, former world champion Tyson Gay competed for the first time in a year to clock 10.00secs in the 100m 'B' race.
The American, who holds the second fastest time in history over the distance, has been sidelined with a hip injury.
