Sylvain Guintoli ended Tom Sykes' run of three straight Superpoles by qualifying fastest at a wet Monza on Saturday.
The Liberty Racing Ducati rider mastered the tough conditions, with the bad weather meaning there were only two 20-minute sessions, as he edged out Sykes (Kawasaki Racing) by 0.714 seconds.
Marco Melandri (BMW Motorrad Motorsport) was third fastest and Carlos Checa (Althea Racing Ducati) completed the front row in the fourth round of the World Superbike Championship.
Jonathan Rea (Honda World Superbike Team) headed the second row from Max Biaggi (Aprilia Racing), Jakub Smrz (Liberty Racing Team Effenbert) and Davide Giugliano (Althea Racing Ducati).
Biaggi leads the overall standings by a point from Checa with Sykes third and Guintoli fourth.
