Gulbis beats Tsonga in final
Ernests Gulbis won the Open 13 in Marseille by beating French favourite Jo-Wilfried Tsonga in the final.
Tsonga went in as second seed, one place above Gulbis at the ATP 250 level event, but he was beaten in straight sets by the Latvian in a final to disappoint the home crowd.
There was only one break of serve in the match, Tsonga saving three break points as the first set went to a tie-break and seven of the eight he faced in the second set.
He could not hold out forever, though, and having finally taken the upper hand Gulbis completed a 7-6 (7/5) 6-4 win, nervelessly serving out to love.
The doubles final provided some consolation for France but disappointment for Great Britain as second seeds Julien Benneteau and Edouard Roger-Vasselin beat Jonny Marray and his Australian partner Paul Hanley 4-6 7-6 (8/6) 13-11 via a champions' tie-break.
