Gurpegui ruled out for season

Athletic Bilbao have confirmed midfielder Carlos Gurpegui will miss the remainder of the season as he needs knee surgery.

The Bilbao skipper was injured during their 1-0 victory over Getafe and although the precise nature of the blow is yet to be confirmed, it is worse than expected.

Saturday's victory was Gurpegui's 31st appearance of the season but the defensive midfielder will play not further part as Bilbao continue to pursue Champions League qualifications.

In an official club statement it was revealed that Gurpegui will undergo arthroscopic surgery, meaning he will have a complete cleaning of his right knee joint.

"After medical consultation, we will proceed in the coming days as the player needs arthroscopic surgery on his right knee," Bilbao's statement read.

"The date of the operation and length of absence will be communicated as soon as possible but will depend on the procedures performed."

Bilbao's first game without their captain comes on Tuesday as they travel to Valencia to face Elche in La Liga.
