Hafeez shines in Pakistan win
Pakistan went back in front in the one-day series against Sri Lanka after a convincing 113-run triumph in the third match in Sharjah.
Mohammad Hafeez hit an unbeaten 140 as Pakistan amassed 326-5, a score their opponents got nowhere near as they were bowled out for 213 inside 45 overs.
Hafeez hit three sixes and 11 fours in his career-best knock that spanned 136 deliveries having come to the crease following the early departure of Sharjeel Khan (two).
Together with Ahmed Shahzad, who looked set to record back-to-back one-day centuries before he was run out for 81 by Lasith Malinga, he shared in a second-wicket stand of 160.
Skipper Misbah-ul-Haq added 40 from just 26 balls and although Shahid Afridi came and went quickly, bowled by Malinga for two, Umar Akmal weighed in with an unbeaten 23 in the closing overs.
In reply, Sri Lanka lost early wickets and were simply never able to recover.
Kusal Perera and Dimuth Karunaratne both fell with the score on 17 in the same Umar Gul over, while Kumar Sangakkara managed just 14 before he was dismissed by Junaid Khan.
Dinesh Chandimal combined with opener Tillakaratne Dilshan to add 59 for the fourth wicket until the latter was bowled by Afridi for a well-made 59 that included 10 boundaries.
Chandimal (36) became the fifth wicket to fall with the score on 132, then Nuwan Kulasekara quickly joined him back in the pavilion to make it 136-6.
Angelo Mathews fought on bravely to make 44 from 51 deliveries, the Sri Lanka skipper smashing three sixes and a four.
However his efforts were only delaying the inevitable. Saeed Ajmal eventually dismissed the all-rounder as the spinner picked up 2-37 from his 10 overs.
Hafeez completed a fine all-round performance by both himself and Pakistan by claiming 2-35 with the ball, though it was left to Gul (3-19) to wrap up the game by bowling Malinga (19).
Sri Lanka must now win the remaining two games to take the series, starting with the fourth one-dayer in Abu Dhabi on December 25. The final match is at the same venue two days later.
