Halep to face Azarenka next

Simona Halep has the daunting task of facing world number one Victoria Azarenka in the second round of the Generali Ladies tournament in Linz.

World number 46 Halep, of Romania, needed only 19 minutes to advance at the expense of Ukraine's Lesia Tsurenko, who retired after losing the first three games, handing Halep the chance to test herself against the top seed.

Seventh seed and home favourite Tamira Paszek was the biggest casualty on Tuesday as she fell 6-2 6-4 to unseeded American Bethanie Mattek-Sands, who broke her opponent four times on her way to victory.

Fifth seed Julia Goerges saw off Daniela Hantuchova 6-4 7-6 (7/5), while fellow German Andrea Petkovic got the better of Barbora Zahlavova-Strycova 7-6 (7/3) 6-2 in a match lasting one hour and 54 minutes.

Belgian qualifier Kirsten Flipkens brushed aside Alize Cornet of France 6-4 6-3 and there were also wins for Croatia's Petra Martic, Romania's Irina-Camelia Begu, Carla Suarez-Navarro of Spain, Switzerland's Romina Oprandi and American qualifier Mallory Burdette.
