Halifax class wins out in rout

Halifax ran in 15 tries in an 84-28 rout of South Wales Scorpions in the fourth round of the Challenge Cup at the Shay.

The Scorpions, who conceded home advantage due to the unavailability of their ground, took the lead after just two minutes when full-back David James sprinted through a gap in the home defence for the opening try and Scott Leatherbarrow kicked the first of four goals.

But Halifax quickly demonstrated their class against their lower-division opponents to establish a 36-12 interval lead and ran riot in the second half with nine further tries.

Tryscorers for the home side were Callum Casey, Craig Ashall, Anthony Bowman (2), Paul White (2), Joe Chandler, Paul Handforth, Steve Tyrer (2), Sean Hesketh, Dane Manning, Makali Aizue, Sean Penkywicz and Lee Paterson, who also kicked 12 goals.

James added a second try for South Wales, while Rodney Peake, Steve Parry and Jack Murphy added others.

Kevin Penny and Martin Ainscough both scored two tries in Swinton's 70-10 win over Championship One side Gateshead Thunder at Leigh Sports Village.

David Mills, Danny Meekin, Ian Watson, Adam Higson, Dale Cunliffe, Darren Hawkyard, Andy Gorski and Chaz I'Anson also touched down for the Lions and Ian Mort kicked 11 goals.

Ryan McBride and Stephen Welton scored tries for Gateshead, with Ryan Clarke kicking a goal.
