Hamilton in Mercedes first

Lewis Hamilton will take the wheel of Mercedes' W05 on day one of this week's Bahrain test, which starts on Wednesday.

The 2008 World Champion will also be on track on Friday, with the Brackley team therefore set to alternate running with team-mate Nico Rosberg.

The second of F1's three pre-season tests finds Mercedes in a strong position. Hamilton and Rosberg covered more laps - 301 - than any of their rivals in Jerez three weeks ago, with the German easily completing a full race distance on the final day.

Speaking at the time, Rosberg voiced cautious optimism, saying that although the car's reliability looked good, they had still to test its performance.

"It's a decent start and I had expected it to be a lot worse. The goal coming here was to get a lot of mileage and we have managed to achieve that quite well. It's a surprise to do so many laps because it's been a mission with the new technology," he said.

"We have no idea where we are on pace so it's really early days," Rosberg acknowledged. "It's not possible to give a mark out of ten because pace is important and we have no idea where we are on pace.

"Nothing was all-out, not even the driver! It was just important to do a lot of kilometres."
