Hanagan is Star at Lingfield

Alben Star came from the clouds to land the All-Weather Sprint Championships Conditions Stakes.

As is his wont, Trinityelitedotcom broke fast from the stalls and had them all in trouble turning into the straight.

He appeared to have everything cooked with just 100 yards to run, but Paul Hanagan was flying down the outside on the six-year-old for his old boss Richard Fahey and won by a head.

Hanagan, already a winner on the 1million card with Ertijaal, said: "It means a lot to win a race like this for Richard, he always looks after me.

"He's done it well in the end, a bit cosy. It suited him as they went very quick. I'm delighted for Richard and the owners.

"I just had to sit and suffer as we were going as quick as we could."

Fahey said: "It's the first time I've been here in a while, the last time I was here I rode in a three-mile chase!

"The horse was in great order and it's great to win on a day like today, I nearly missed the first it was that busy.

"It sounds silly but we needed one to come out to even get in.

"We have a new vet in the yard who has done a few things with him and he worked brilliant last week.

"I told Paul he had a chance, the owner took 20s and he's returned 25s, he had a bit on each-way.

"Me and Paul have been together 17 years and I stay at his digs when I'm down in Newmarket, he's gone on to better things.

"That's a huge day for the horse, the handicapper might kill him and he'll struggle in the big handicaps but he's probably not a Group horse.

"I was going to go home straight after the race but I might have a drink now."
