
Lleyton Hewitt pulled off an upset win in the first round of Valencia Open with a 6-3 6-4 win over fourth seeded Juan Monaco of Argentina.
The 31-year-old Australian broke Monaco five times on his way to a win which deals a severe blow to Monaco's hopes of muscling into the season-ending ATP Tour Championships in London next month.
Hewitt will play Croatian qualifier Ivan Dodig in round two after the world number 110 pulled off an upset of his own with a 6-2 7-6 (8-6) win over Germany's Philipp Kohlschreiber in almost two hours.
American fifth seed John Isner saw off Fabio Fognini of Italy 6-3 6-7 (7-4) 7-5, Fernando Verdasco won an all-Spanish affair with wild card Tommy Robredo 6-3 6-4, and there were also wins for Albert Ramos and David Goffin.
