History for amazing Aigles
Cirrus Des Aigles made history as he became the first horse to win the Qatar Prix Dollar at Longchamp for a third time.
Winner of the Champion Stakes at Ascot two years ago and second to Frankel 12 months later, the Corine Barande-Barbe-trained gelding had found it tough this year before winning at Maisons-Laffitte last month.
Clearly now back to something like his best, the seven-year-old settled in mid-division under Christophe Soumillon as Olivier Peslier set what looked a testing gallop on Planteur.
Soumillon simply cruised into contention in the straight and barely had to ask his mount a question in stretching further and further clear.
Mandour was second with Petit Chevalier third.
A very comfortable length and three-quarters was the winning margin, and all roads for the popular Cirrus Des Aigles now lead back to Ascot in a fortnight, where he will bid to regain the Qipco-sponsored Champion Stakes.
"I never doubted him," said Barande-Barbe.
"He was nearly at his best today, and he will be at his best on the 19th."
