Hitzfeld urges Shaqiri to stay

Switzerland boss Ottmar Hitzfeld has urged winger Xherdan Shaqiri not to quit Bayern Munich amid speculation over his future.

The 22-year-old is yet to truly establish himself as a regular at the Allianz Arena since his move from Basel in 2012, leading to reports linking him with an exit.

Liverpool and Manchester United are among the clubs rumoured to be keen on Shaqiri, but his national team manager, Hitzfeld, believes that he is good enough to star to for the German and European champions.

"I am always a fan of players staying firm to ongoing deals and bite through tough times," Hitzfeld told kicker-Sportmagazin.

"Xherdan Shaqiri is playing for the best club in the world and has the quality to be a first-team regular. The only thing he needs is to be patient."

While Mattias Sammer, Bayern's director of sport, dismissed the possibility of Shaqiri leaving the Bundesliga side.

"Xherdan Shaqiri is able to play in various positions and he is an important player for the future of this club. We do not consider a transfer in this case," he said.
