Hughes plots Sussex glory

Richard Hughes feels Toronado’s tactical versatility could be the key to success when he goes head-to-head with Kingman in the QIPCO Sussex Stakes at Glorious Goodwood.

Richard Hannon's charge got the better of Dawn Approach in last year's Duel On The Downs and now has to see off John Gosden's brilliant Irish 2000 Guineas and St James's Palace Stakes winner to keep the crown.

The jockey told Racing UK: \"Toronado's a good, hardy horse and he looks a million dollars. All his work has been great. We have to give 8lb to one of the best milers we've seen for a while though.

\"Mine is a very strong, versatile horse who can make the running if needed. That will stand him in good stead around Goodwood, it could be a small field and tactical. I wouldn't swap him anyway.

\"It's going to be hard to beat Kingman, I'm under no illusions but there are no chinks in our armour and he's a tougher horse this year than last year.

\"I tried not to get into a battle with him last year, if I was going to win I was going to win quick, but this year is different.\"
