IAAF confirms failed doping tests
Seven athletes failed drug tests at last month's World Championships in Moscow, the IAAF has confirmed.
The seven, including one finalist - Ukrainian javelin thrower Roman Avramenko who tested positive for the steroid dehydrochlormethyltestosterone - have been sanctioned or provisionally suspended. Avramenko finished fifth in the Russian capital.
Three athletes tested positive for the blood booster EPO - marathon runner Jeremias Saloj of Guatemala and race walkers Ebrahim Rahimian from Iran and Ayman Kozhakhmetova from Kazakhstan, whose urine sample also returned traces of exogenous testosterone.
Sprinters Yelena Ryabova of Turkmenistan and Elyzaveta Bryzgina of Ukraine tested positive for banned steroids and Afghan sprinter Massoud Azizi for a metabolite of nandrolone.
The IAAF announced in a statement that 538 athletes had their urine tested during the championships in Russia, along with 132 before the event.
