Icher leads in LPGA Classic

France's Karine Icher finished top of the leaderboard after the first day of the Swinging Skirts LPGA Classic in Daly City, California.

Icher carded a flawless round of 66 which included six birdies to finish on six-under-par, two strokes ahead of a five-way tie for second place.

Lydia Ko, Ilhee Lee, Jenny Shin, Maria McBride and Dewi Claire Schreefel ended the first round on four under, with a further group of five tied for third place a further stroke back.

The first day's play was brought to an early conclusion due to bad light, with more than 20 players still to complete their opening round.

"It was just a good day," Icher told www.lpga.com. "I'm happy about that. I stayed confident all through the round.

"I think the strategy on this golf course is to stay short of the hole. It's a tough golf course, especially with the wind and temperature. It gets so cold. You try to get to stay warm and try to catch the right wind and you go with it and make some putts."
