Icon takes starring role

A review of the rest of the action from Sandown Park where Chilworth Icon was the first leg of a Mick Channon double.

Chilworth Icon ended a losing run stretching back more than two years in the National Youth Music Theatre Charity Handicap at Sandown.

The last time Mick Channon's 20-1 chance had struck was in an Italian Group Three as a juvenile, and he had also picked up the Woodcote Stakes at the Derby meeting.

Sam Hitchcott was luckier than many in a typically messy event down the five-furlong chute, sneaking up the inside and coming two and a half lengths clear.

The trainer's son and assistant, Michael, said: "He was very useful at two, but struggled from a high mark at three. He just needed everything to fall right for him."

There was to be a double for Channon via the William Buick-ridden Popeswood (5-1) in the NYMT Student Fund Nursery.

A maiden from eight previous starts, the Haatef colt travelled well and unleashed a striking turn of foot to collect by two and a quarter lengths.

Channon jnr said: "He's never disappointed us really, he's just growing into himself. He's a super little chap and I suppose we'll wait and see what the handicapper does.

"If he's due to go up a lot, we'll have to get him out again quickly."
