Indians relinquish CL crown
The Mumbai Indians surrendered their Champions League Twenty20 title defence following a six-run defeat to the Chennai Super Kings.
Mumbai started the day needing favours elsewhere to progress to the semi-finals but a Lions win over Yorkshire in the early game meant they were out even before they reached the Wanderers Stadium on Saturday.
The Super Kings' fate had already been sealed with back-to-back defeats but they at least grabbed their first win after posting 173 for eight.
Lasith Malinga provided some consolation for the deflated Indians as he grabbed five for 32, but Faf du Plessis' 52 from 33 balls at the top of the order meant the Super Kings posted a testing total.
The Indians began their chase at a crawl, reaching 30 for two after seven overs, before Dinesh Kartik and Kieron Pollard threatened to snatch an unlikely win.
After Kartik blasted 74 from 45 balls, Pollard took centre stage - launching Ravichandran Ashwin for three sixes in the 18th over - but he fell early in the final over to leave the Indians short on 167 for seven.
