Injured Reichelt to miss Sochi
Austrian skier Hannes Reichelt will miss the Winter Olympics after deciding to undergo back surgery.
Reichelt would have been one of Austria's best medal hopes following an excellent season that has seen him finish on the podium on five occasions and was capped by winning the World Cup downhill meeting in Kitzbuhel, Austria.
Yet barely two days after that feat, it was confirmed the 33-year-old will not compete in Sochi due to a herniated disc in his back, for which he will undergo an operation on Monday.
"The X-ray speaks for itself and surgery is unavoidable," Reichelt said on the Osterreichischer Skiverband (Austrian Ski Federation) website.
"Health comes in first place and I want to keep doing sports after my career. Unfortunately my Olympic dream is in shatters."
