Injured Toms out of US PGA
Former champion David Toms has withdrawn from the US PGA Championship in Kentucky with a back injury.
While most of the golfing world was waiting on updates of Tiger Woods' status, Toms was forced to admit defeat in his bid to return from a similar back problem to the former world No 1.
His place in the field has been taken by America's Shawn Stefani, who leads the PGA Tour in total driving this season and lost to Justin Rose in a playoff for the Quicken Loans National in June.
Stefani will be playing in his first PGA Championship.
Toms won the tournament in 2001 by making par from the fairway on the 18th hole at Atlanta Athletic Club to beat Phil Mickelson by one shot.
He holds the major championship scoring record after finishing that event on a 15-under par total of 265.
