Chris Hutchings laid into his Ipswich players after they were thumped 3-0 at home by Sheffield Wednesday.
Town's results cost manager Paul Jewell his job in midweek, but there was no sign of improvement as defeat to their fellow strugglers made it 12 games without a win.
Wednesday had not won in nine before kick-off, and caretaker boss Hutchings said: "I'm angry and disappointed. The players let themselves down and need to look in the mirror. They should be professional and have a desire and drive to perform.
"That's their job and they're well paid to do it. But they haven't done so for a little while and that's why we're adrift at the bottom of the table.
"It wasn't very good and there was a lot of anxiousness about. We conceded in the first minute and were on the back foot from the start.
"Confidence in sport is a massive thing and whether that affected some of them, I don't know. One or two of the older players didn't perform anywhere near as well as they can do.
"It's going to be very hard for whoever takes over. If they can get new players in it'll help. That's what's needed, if I'm honest. You never want to take over a team at the bottom of the table but it's an opportunity for someone."
what do you think?
