Irvine admits Samaras interest

West Brom boss Alan Irvine has confirmed his interest in former Celtic striker Georgios Samaras.

The Greece international is a free agent after leaving Celtic Park in the summer and is expected to hold talks with the Baggies.

Irvine said: "He's a player we're aware of. We have enquired about him. Nothing is done as far as he's concerned.

\"We have some lists that have been extremely long at times and then they have got shorter and then got longer again.\"

Malaga, Sevilla, and Lokomotiv Moscow have also all been linked with a move for Samaras and Irvine admitted he knows that the player has a number of options.

\"There is no doubt they are easier if they are free agents because you are at least in the position where you are taking another club out of the equation,\" he said.

"You are not waiting for them saying whether they will sell the player or not, but of course free agents have a lot of options and you can find it is tough to complete the deal.\"

Samaras scored 73 goals in 249 games for Celtic after arriving from Manchester City, initially on loan, in 2008. He was part of Greece's World Cup squad this summer as they confounded the odds to reach the last 16, where they lost out to Costa Rica.
