Isner powers through
John Isner made easy work of Kevin Anderson to advance to the second round of the Western & Southern Open on Monday night.
The big server eased past the South African 6-3 6-4 in just 64 minutes on the hard courts of Cincinnati in the United States.
The pressure was on Anderson early in the opening set as Isner forced him to save two break points in the second game. The American would then break him in the fourth game and hold serve to close out the set.
The second set was a tighter affair, but Isner again edged ahead in the fifth game. Anderson rallied to produce three break point opportunities in the eighth game, but Isner managed to save them all and would serve out the match in style.
The win improves his head-to-head against the South African to 7-3 and he will now face Marinko Matosevic in round two. The Bosnian defeated Nicolas Mahut 6-4 7-6 (7-4) on Monday.
"If you look at our past matches, there haven't been many breaks of serve, there hasn't been anything that's really separated us, but tonight was a little bit different and I played well," Isner told atpworldtour.com..
"I'm just happy to move on."
In other results, Fabio Fognini defeated Edouard Roger-Vasselin 6-4 4-6 7-6 (7-5), Gilles Simon tolled over Bernard Tomic 6-3 6-2 and Gael Monfils beat Frederico Delbonis 6-3 3-6 6-3.
