Izagirre wins 16th stage
Jon Izagirre secured victory on the 16th stage of the Giro d'Italia with Joaquim Rodriguez retaining the lead in the general classification.
Izagirre (Euskaltel-Euskadi) escaped from a 10-man breakaway group on the final climb and finished 16 seconds ahead of Alessandro De Marchi (Androni Giacattoli-Venezuela) and Stef Clement (Rabobank).
Rodriguez (Katusha) retained the pink jersey ahead of Ryder Hesjedal (Garmin Barracuda) and Ivan Basso (Liquigas Cannondale).
With Jose Herrada Lopez as the top ranked rider in the breakaway, at more than 32 minutes down in the General Classification, the field was happy to let the group go and give themselves a quiet day to transition back into racing before facing the upcoming mountain stages.
As the peloton allowed the breakaway, Herrada, Izagirre and Mathias Frank traded the lead with the latter two then building a small lead.
Izagirre took the lead, followed by De Marchi with Frank and Herrada chasing, with the Basque rider pulling away as the course flattened out near the end.
The Euskaltel-Euskadi rider rejoiced as he crossed the finish line, and 16 seconds later De Marchi and Clement came in to complete the podium.
It was the second win of the year for second-year professional Izagirre.
