Kerber out of Fes tournament

Fifth seed Angelique Kerber crashed out of the Grand Prix de SAR La Princesse Lalla Meryem in the first round in Fes on Monday.

Unseeded Russian Ksenia Pervak overcame her German opponent Kerber 6-1 4-6 6-3 to secure a second-round meeting with either Alberta Brianti or Laura Pous-Tio.

Fourth seed Greta Arn of Hungary had no such worries, advancing when Austria's Patricia Mayr-Achleitner retired at 6-0 1-0 down.

Seventh seed Simona Halep of Romania was another winner on the opening day of the WTA Tour's only stop in Africa, beating Belarus' Anastasiya Yakimova 6-2 6-0.

Also on Monday, Alla Kudryavtseva came from a set down to overcome fellow Russian Nina Bratchikova 2-6 6-2 6-3.
