Konta upsets Davis in China
Johanna Konta upset Lauren Davis in an epic first-round match at the Yinzhou Bank International Women's Tennis Open in Ningbo, China.
The British number three and world number 125, looking to build on her quarter-final appearance in Guangzhou last week, fired down nine aces compared to just one from her higher-ranked American opponent as she claimed a 6-4 4-6 6-3 win in the WTA 125K Series event.
In a match that took three hours and five minutes to complete, Konta successfully converted four of her 15 break points while saving eight of the 11 fashioned by teenage eighth seed Davis.
The 22-year-old Konta, who has now won two of her three career meetings with world 82 Davis, will next face Katarzyna Piter of Poland, who beat fellow qualifier Yafan Wang of China 6-4 6-4.
Second seed and home favourite Zheng Jie never looked like suffering an upset as she crushed Russian Olga Puchkova 6-1 6-3.
Third-seeded Spaniard Lourdes Dominguez Lino enjoyed an equally emphatic win as she beat Chan Yung-jan of Taiwan 6-2 6-2.
Yvonne Meusburger, the fourth seed from Austria, crushed Dutch qualifier Richel Hogenkamp 6-0 6-1, but Ukraine's fifth seed Lesia Tsurenko went out, beaten 6-7 (4/7) 6-2 6-2 by Romania's Alexandra Dulgheru.
There were also first-round wins for Yaroslava Shvedova from Kazhakstan, Czech Petra Cetkovska and Chinese pair Zheng Saisai and Zhang Shuai.
