Kuznetsova eases to win
Svetlana Kuznetsova continued her comeback from a knee injury with a straight sets win over Andrea Hlavackova at the BNP Paribas Open.
The Russian former world number two, now ranked 46, defeated her Czech opponent 6-3 6-1 to set up a second round meeting with Serbian Jelena Jankovic.
Kuznetsova, a quarter-finalist as the Australian Open, won in 71 minutes to secure a meeting with 18th seed Jankovic.
In an all-Italian battle there was a win for Francesca Schiavone over countrywoman Flavia Pennetta by a 7-5 6-1 scoreline.
Home player Christina McHale was a winner over Bulgaria's Tsvetana Pironkova, the American winning by a 6-3 6-4 scoreline.
American qualifier Mallory Burdette beat veteran countrywoman Jill Craybas 6-3 6-1.
Burdette told the tournament website: "I think I've played very well so far.
"I've made a concerted effort to be aggressive in all of my matches.
"I'm happy with the way I've finished strong in each match. I didn't have a whole lot of nerves out there today; I was ready to go."
Burdette will face number 23 seed Tamira Paszek in round two.
South Africa's Chanelle Scheepers beat France's Kristina Mladenovic 6-4 6-1 and Spain's Silvia Soler-Espinosa was a 6-7 (7/9), 6-2 6-1 winner against home player Vania King.
There were also wins for Romania's Simona Halep, Sweden's Johanna Larsson, Ksenia Pervak of Kazakhstan and Belarus' Olga Govortsova.
Israel's Shahar Peer, Spanish Anabel Medina Garrigues, Lara Arruabarrena-Vecino and Lourdes Dominguez Lino, America's Maria Jose Martinez Sanchez and Ukraine's Lesia Tsurenko also had wins.
